Rug, Carpet and Kilim Cleaning

Repairs: before and after.

Our Cleaning Process

The cleaning process we use involves a number of comprehensive stages;

  • First of all and most importantly, we separate the rugs and carpets based on whether they are hand made or machine made. Hand made rugs generally are more sensitive.
  • Rugs and carpets are checked for past repairs or restoration work and for any current damage to minimise the risk of any further damage.
  • Then we remove as much dust and foreign objects from the rug as possible, using the Dolaplama technique where it is suited to the rug or carpet or specialised vacuum cleaners.
  • Rugs and carpets are then tested for colour fastness. If the colours are found to run, we have to use special methods like dry cleaning or extraction to expose the rug to as little water as possible.
  • We then check to see if there are areas on the rug or carpet that are more soiled or if there are stains on the rug. If necessary we pre-treat those areas.
  • Unfortunately there are some stains including pet stains that may not be removed as they can have permanently changed the colours of the wool. All possible methods are used to eradicate stains.
  • If the rug or carpet smells or has a pet odour, we will neutralise the odour using materials that will not damage the rug or carpet.
  • Rugs and carpets are then washed with one of several methods depending on their type, age, colour fastness, thickness. Some of the methods we use include; complete soaking, dry cleaning, jet spray and extraction. Fringes on rugs are treated separately to prevent damage.

Rugs kilims and carpets, including oriental and antiques, that are cleaned professionally especially with the Dolaplama technique are deemed to be much cleaner and healthier with the life span of the rug or carpet being increased.

We recommended that you have your rug cleaned professionally once every two years. To protect your investment it is also important to rotate the rug on the floor once a year so your rug gets equal amount of traffic and light so that it wears evenly.

The Dolaplama

The technique of Dolaplama allows for all foreign materials to be shaken off without causing damage or strain on your rugs and carpets. The rug or carpet is securely placed in the spinning cabinet and the action of the cabinet causes the carpet fibres to open slightly allowing the foreign particles to fall out. The opening of the rug or carpet fibres allows the carpet to regain its original softness and gives it more of a shine.

Note: This cleaning technique is not recommend for rugs or carpets that have worn out, decayed or that have been incorrectly repaired or restored.

To protect your investment and for your rug, kilim or carpet to last generations please call us to schedule a pick-up or for more information.

Professional Cleaning?

Why have your rug's cleaned by professionals?

Even though your rug looks clean, the normal settling of dust, dirt and grime is abrasive and will shorten the lifespan of all rugs, kilims and carpets especially antiques.

As carpets are used (walked on) they accumulate dust into the strands and fibres. With each person walking on the rug or carpet the dust and other particles are pressed deeper into the fibres causing them to become compressed and stick to each other. The material caught between  the strands and fibres then accellerates the wear on th carpets and rugs.

Dirt, dust and foreign materials that are not a part of the carpet should be extracted without damaging the carpet. Domestic and commercial vacuum cleaners cannot remove all of the dust and foreign material and sometimes loosen the fibres of the carpet. This means that the lifespan of rugs and carpets that are only cleaned by vacuuming is shortened as a result of the remaining material.
